Camping Out at the Bush Ranch - Mothers Against the War - Gold Star Families: Interview with Celeste Zappala
Celeste Zappala's son, Dewey, joined the Pennsylvania National Guard and boasted to his mother that no one from his unit had been killed in the line of duty since 1945. What is that old adage about tempting fate? Dewey was killed just 6 weeks after arriving in Iraq. He was 30 years old.
There's not a mother on earth who wants to lose a child to any war, but love of country and rightness of cause could at least help a parent find solace that the death was not in vain.
But there was no comfort in this death. In any attempt to persuade President Bush to pull out of Iraq, several Gold Star Mothers camped out at the Bush Ranch. Celeste Zappala was one of those moms.
