Disability: Interview with Donna McNamee

In the year 2000 I had a freak accident which put me in a cast for 7 months during which time I was unable to drive and had to learn to walk and how to go up and down stairs all over again. Those 7 months of incapacitation were real eye openers for me. People/Society treated me differently: Some with crossness and scorn and others with great solicitousness and an almost fake joy. I wanted to scream, "But its just me, I'm still the same Libba!" I was disabled for only 7 months, Donna McNamee has been "disabled" all of her life - but don't tell her that. Donna was born with Spina Bifida and the doctors told her parents to "put her away" but they refused to do so and today Donna sits on a Mass Transportation Board, has run for political office and had considerable clout in helping to get the Federal Americans With Disabilities Act the law of the land.
