Homosexuality: Interview with Linda Malick

Homosexuality has been a part of every culture and civilization for many thousands of years. Regarding all things sexual; the morals and laws of any particular culture at any given time determine the role of homosexuals within that society. Because they were often thought to be endowed with special mystical or magical powers some early cultures revered homosexuals and assigned them special status within the tribe or clan.

Unfortunately the more autocratic and male dominated the society is, the more gay bashing will take place. Hitler's maniacal psychobabble about Aryan blood and racial purity sanctioned the murder and torture of thousands of homosexuals.

Another milieu, which spawns invectives of homophobia and gay bashing, is that created by the religious right especially under the current Presidential administration of George W. Bush. This group of self-proclaimed interpreters of Biblical prose and God speak, have tried to recreate the "Glory Days" of the McCarthy Era where fear, hatred, and bigotry reigned supreme. It didn't work in the 1950s, even though most homosexuals were tightly locked in the closet at that time, so I pray these scare tactics will die an ignominious death in the 21st century..

My guest for this interview, Linda Malicki, was very articulate, forthright, and unapologetic. Some of the issues that were discussed included: 1) Gays in the military, 2) Gay marriage, 3) The roles of homosexuals throughout history, 4) Coming out of the "closet", 5) Media portrayal, 6) Family acceptance/rejection, 7) The presence of gays at all levels of society, 8) AIDS.
