Afghanistan Interview with Zeeba Shora Shomley
I first met Zeeba Shomley at a Women's Convention at Southern Connecticut State University. She was dressed all in black as if in mourning (technically I guess she is) and she had a commanding presence, which made the whole room become silent. During the interview Zeeba spoke lovingly about her childhood in Afghanistan. That Afghanistan is now just a distant memory, which can never be recaptured.
In its zeal to defeat Soviet interests in Afghanistan, the CIA funded the Taliban and brought them to power while naively thinking they would become our friends and establish our right to be there. Instead we opened Pandora's Box.
It is often said that the real victims of war are the women and children. Nowhere could this be more true than in Afghanistan. Before the Taliban came to power women comprised high percentages of the work force, i.e. 70% of all teachers, 50% of civil servants, 40% of all doctors and 50% of all University students. When the Taliban gained control all women were forced to quit work, no female was allowed to be at school at any level, all women must wear burkahs, no woman was allowed to sing and they had to paint their windows black so they couldn't be seen and could be killed by stoning for any real or imagined sexual misconduct. Please take an antacid before listening.
