Interview with Sister Elizabeth (Libby) Schaffer and "Mary" (a false name) an ex-convict. Sister Libby was the Director of a women's rehabilitation program in Cleveland, OH

Over the 5-year period from 1999 to 2004, the number of sentenced female prisoners in the USA increased from 82,402 to 96,125. This represents an increase of 17% in just 5 years. Not surprisingly the 3 largest increases were: Federal prisons, Florida, and Texas. All of these 3 areas are under the sphere of influence and domination of the Bush administration and the "Religious Right". The attitude toward women has changed over the past 7 years to a throw back of 1950's paternalism and "father knows best".

When a woman is incarcerated it has a far-reaching effect on her family especially her children. Also it is common practice in many states to arrest and imprison women who do not "tell" on their husbands and/or boyfriend but are innocent of any crime. They usually end up with a heavier sentence than the male crime perpetrator.
