Raison d'Etre or Reason To Be, This Lifetime
By Libba HaLavey
My Raison d'Etre or reason to be, this lifetime, is an always changing kaleidoscope of purpose. When I was a child, it was to be the "best" daughter, student, friend and citizen I could possibly be. In many ways these categories still continue, but due to natural rhythms of life in somewhat different forms. I am daughter now only in my heart and mind and in old photograph albums. One day on my tombstone it will again say "daughter" but it will be incomplete. When I became a wife and a teacher, both at the tender age of 21, I again whished and tried to be best. You see I had a degree and a Katubah*, both of which told me what I was.

I became pregnant - gave birth and had the great fun and opportunity of raising my three wonderful children. I realized then that I had discovered one of my main purposes of life. It was life itself that was my purpose! Giving life - nurturing - watching things grow - that was my purpose. Whether these "things" were children - plants - animals - or ideas - creating is one road I love to walk upon.
Consciousness raising is my second major purpose. Consciousness raising about social issues or injustices - the environment - extra terrestrials - women's rights - the rights of children - Jewish issues - metaphysics - You name it, I'll raise it. The less delicate might say I was a "shit stirrer" or a troublemaker. C'est la vie.

Finally, I believe my last main purpose is words. The conveying of ideas whether in spoken or printed form is something I do very well. These do not have to be only my ideas but the ideas or feelings of others representing all walks of life - each with uniqueness of mind and purpose.

I don't know where I am on the journey - I only know that I do take time to smell the roses and that the walk is probably more fun than the destination.
